LISE HAINES is the author of three novels, Girl in the Arena, Small Acts of Sex and Electricity a Book Sense Pick in 2006 and one of ten Best Book Picks for 2006 by the NPR station in San Diego , and In My Sister s Country,, a finalist for the 2003 Paterson Fiction Prize Her short stories and essays have appeared in a number of literary journals and she was a finalist for the PEN Nelson Algren Award.Haines is Writer in Residence at Emerson College She has been Briggs Copeland Lecturer at Harvard, and her other teaching credits include UCLA, UCSB, and Stonecoast at the University of Southern Maine She grew up in Chicago, lived in Southern California for many years, and now resides in the Boston area She holds a B.A from Syracuse University and an MFA from the Bennington Writing Seminars.

Oh my, where to start with this one But for the fact that the narrator makes you clench your teeth at times with her destructive tendencies, which are merciless, I d give this a 5 Another new wonderful writer I discovered in a discount bookstore years ago Why did I not read it sooner I highly recommend this books to men or women who love lit fiction, fiction centering on psychology, fiction that is inventive but accessible, fiction that doesn t tie up neatly at the end, fiction that makes you go [...]

Someone else might like this book, but I had a very difficult time connecting to any of the characters so it was hard to enjoy I can enjoy a depressing pessimistic coming of age book if the story is told well and at least one of the characters makes me feel sympathy for them, but that didn t happen with this one.

    3. Perfectly captures the voice of a rebellious teenage girl The only annoying thing is that the main character is a rebellious teenage girl.
